Korean Vowel Letters (모음)

The Basic Vowel Letters(모음, moeum)

These are basic vowel letters(모음, moeum) of 한글. The pronunciation & the names are under each letters.

* The pronunciation & the names of basic vowel letters 

The pronunciation & the names are same. As I wrote in previous post, 모음 can be used only for 중성. So each pronunciation of 모음 is always same. Memorizing it is much easier than 자음.
The Combined Vowel Letters

These are combined 모음 of 한글. These are made by combination of basic vowel letters. ㅐ is made of ㅏ and l(이). ㅘ is made of ㅗ and ㅏ. The pronunciation & the names are under each letters.

* The pronunciation & the names of combined vowel letters 

The pronunciation & the names are same. As I wrote in previous post, 모음 can be used only for 중성. So each pronunciation of 모음 is always same. Memorizing it is much easier than 자음.
Actually, even Korean people, can not distinguish some pronunciation of combined vowel letters, ㅐ and ㅔ, ㅒ and ㅖ, ㅙ and ㅚ. Pronunciation is almost same. The only way to distinguish those pronunciation is memorizing vocabulary and learning grammar.

Korean Double Consonant Letters (쌍자음)

The Names

There are 5 double consonant letters(쌍자음, ssangjaeum). These are 쌍자음 of 한글. The pronunciation & the names are under each letters.

* The pronunciation & the names of double consonant letters

The Pronunciation

The pronunciation is stronger than basic consonant letters. 쌍(ssang) is added in front of the names of basic consonant letters. '쌍' means 'double'. Look at the table below and compare to English pronunciation.

When 쌍자음 are used for 초성, pronounce stronger than basic consonant letters. 'ㄲ', 'ㄸ', 'ㅃ' are pronounced as 'k', 't', 'p' behind 's'. Only 'ㄲ', 'ㅆ' are used for 종성 and pronunciation is same as 'ㄱ', 'ㅅ'. 'ㄸ', 'ㅃ', 'ㅉ' are never used for 종성.

Korean Basic Consonant Letters (자음)

The Names

The name of each 자음 were made by a rule. The [□ieu□] rule.
In the box, each pronunciation is put. That is the names of each letters. It means, once you memorize the name of each letters, you can pronounce every consonant letters.

* [□ieu□] rule 

But there is exception for only 3 letters; ㄱ, ㄷ, and ㅅ. Those letters had followed the rule, but because of pronunciation, the names were modified to pronounce easier. So, just memorize.

The Pronunciation

These are basic consonant letters(자음, jaeum) of 한글. The pronunciation is under each letters.

* The pronunciation of basic consonant letters

As I wrote in previous post, since 자음 can be used for both 초성 & 종성. Actual pronunciation when it is used for 초성 & 종성 is little bit different. It sounds difficult but not that difficult. Look at the table below and compare to English pronunciation.

Some of English pronunciation, such as 'f', 'v', 'z' is not exist in Korean pronunciation. When 'ㅇ(ieung)' is used for 초성, it is not pronounced. We pronounce only 중성&종성.

How The Korean Alphabet Is Written

The Korean Alphabet(한글, Hangeul)

The Korean alphabet(한글, Hangeul) was made by king Sejong in 1443. Hangeul is a featural alphabet of 14 consonant and 10 vowel letters. (We are going to study the name of each alphabet & pronunciation.)

* The Korean alphabet(한글, Hangeul) 

Hangeul Letters Are Grouped Into Blocks

Instead of being written sequentially like the letters of the Latin alphabet, Hangeul letters are grouped into blocks, such as 한 han, each of which transcribes a syllable. (In the past, the Korean alphabet used to be written sequentially. But, today we rarely can see the old form.)

* Hangeul letters are grouped into blocks

By the shape of vowel letters, positions of vowel letters are difference. Horizontal shape letters are written under the consonant, vertical shape letters are written on the right side of the consonant, and if both horizontal & vertical shape vowel letters are become one, be written both under & right side.Although the syllable 한 han may look like a single character, it is actually composed of three letters: ㅎ(h), ㅏ(a), and ㄴ(n). Each syllabic block consists of two to six letters, including at least one consonant and one vowel. Each syllabic Block is divided by 3 parts, initial(초성, choseong), medial(중성, jungseong), and final(종성, jongseong). To make a syllabic block, both choseong & jungseong are always required. Consonant letters can be used for both choseong & jongseong. Vowel letters can be used only for jungseong.

* The placement of Hangeul

As i said, each syllabic block is composed of two to six letters. It means that there is a huge number of blocks. The number of mathematically possible distinct blocks is 11,172. But you do not have to memorize every blocks, because once you memorize 14 consonant and 10 vowel letters, you can make every blocks. YES, 11,172 BLOCKS.
